When asked what accounts for her success, McBride said it starts with knowing what to expect.
“It’s all knowing the condition book and entering your horses where they belong,” McBride said. “I try to pick the right horses to bring with me when I come down here from knowing the competition here for so many years. But that’s harder here at Tampa this year. For example, at Great Lakes Downs, you basically know what you’re going to run against every two or three weeks. It’s harder down here because you think you may be going in with the best horse then see the overnight and go ‘Whoa! Here comes someone from Gulfstream or PaysonPark.’”
McBride, who is a two-time national female training leader by wins (2001, 2000), according to Daily Racing Form statistics, is one of five women in the final top 25 Tampa trainers for the 2008-2009 season and noted the changing times. “It’s amazing,” she noted regarding the standings. “It’s always been a male-oriented business. While I can’t say it’s necessarily easier, it’s certainly better than it was when I first started.”
